Fabrica – Men in Sheds

About the service and what to expect

Fabrica’s Men’s Shed is a free community workshop space for adult men in Brighton and Hove, which includes space for woodwork, arts and crafts. They are currently based in central Brighton, on Castle Square.

A Men’s Shed is a larger version of the typical man’s shed in the garden  – a place to pursue practical interests at leisure, to practice skills and enjoy making and mending. The difference is that garden sheds and their activities are often solitary in nature while Men’s Sheds are the opposite. They are about social connections and friendship building, sharing skills and knowledge, and of course a lot of laughter.

At our Men’s Shed, members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and inclusive venue. Activities provide structure and companionship but without emphasis on discussion of mental wellbeing. This approach can be described as ‘shoulder to shoulder’ rather than ‘face to face’.

“To be able to come to the shed and work and help others gives me a great deal of satisfaction. I feel a sense of worth and love the way all the men work together.”

Gerry, a Men in Sheds participant
